The world will always need people who know they have a job to do. One nail in the wall after another. One parking ticket issued after another. One piece of code written after another. Getting things done and going home before starting all over the next day.

Those who are building careers tend to create more impact. They’re always thinking about better strategies, better programs, better teams. There’s more of an eye towards the bigger picture and longer term results.

A calling, however, is a different matter altogether. That’s the person who does her job and builds her career in the service of others. .A calling is where the connection with people for a higher purpose meets the road. When we find a calling, then the inevitable disappointments, roadblocks and even failures that come along can’t keep us from getting back up again because we won’t let them keep us from our mission: making the world a better place than how we found it.

She’s easy to recognize when you meet her. She may be an entrepreneur or a carpenter or a software engineer. You know her immediately. You can hear the calling in her voice and see it in her eyes.
